Binchotan charcoal
A piece of charcoal has been added to the bottle to purify your water for 6 months. It may seem strange to purify your drinking water with a piece of charcoal, but the Japanese have been doing this for centuries. Binchotan is an activated carbon made from tree branches and is known for its ability to soften water, add beneficial minerals and absorb unwanted tastes and odours, such as chlorine.
Fill the bottle with water and add the charcoal. Ideally, leave it overnight, but you will already notice a difference after an hour. If you notice that the filter's effectiveness decreases over time, you can recharge it by boiling it for ten minutes. Boiling washes away the impurities, allowing the charcoal to absorb more again.
When used daily to filter 1.1 litres of water, each stick lasts approximately 3 months. You can then 'recharge' your charcoal stick by placing it in boiling water for 10 minutes. This process reactivates the charcoal and removes any contaminants that have accumulated on the surface, allowing it to filter your water for another 3 months.
