Binchotan charcoal
A stick of charcoal has been added to the bottle that purifies your water for 6 months. It may seem strange to purify your drinking water with a piece of charcoal, but the Japanese have been doing this for centuries. Binchotan is an activated carbon made from tree branches and is known for its ability to soften water, add good minerals and absorb unwanted tastes and odors, such as chlorine.

Fill the bottle with water and add the charcoal. Leaving it overnight is ideal, but after an hour you can actually taste the difference. If you notice that the effectiveness of the filter decreases over time, you can recharge it by boiling it for ten minutes. Boiling rinses away the impurities and allows the charcoal to absorb more.

When used daily to filter 1.1 liters of water, each stick will last approximately 3 months. You can then 'charge' your charcoal stick by placing it in boiling water for 10 minutes. This process reactivates the charcoal and removes the contaminants that have built up on the surface, allowing it to filter your water for an additional 3 months.
